The Circle of Life is the One that gives birth to the myriad things.
In this comprehensive 13 class online program, we will study the creation and essence of Life itself, as it was seen by the great sages of classical Chinese medicine. Genevieve Le Goff, Shang Han Za Bing Lun scholar trained in the lineages of the Fire Spirit School and Tian (Bawei) Heming, specializes in fetal-maternal medicine, working closely with local midwives and obstetricians for 15 years. She has created this course to respond to students' requests for training "from the ground up", from the foundational aspects of classical physiology and herbal formulation, to their particular clinical applications in the treatment of pregnant, birthing and postpartum women. Beyond this practical dimension, this training is also an ode to the beauty of Chinese medicine as a cosmological worldview, and an offering to relieve suffering for as many future generations as possible.
Prelude: We will start with the principles of classical physiology, followed by a detailed study of flavors and formula architecture through the Nei Jing, the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, and the line-by-line analysis of the Tang Ye Jing's 25 archetypal flavors and each and every one of its formulae, associated symptoms and applications. The formulae of the Tang Ye Jing are each ascribed a heavenly body or quadrant, and are reflective of human microcosmic physiology and heavenly macrocosmic rhythms. They served as a template for Zhang Zhong Jing's revered Shang Han Za Bing Lun.
Body: Our study will continue with the formation of new life and the development of the fetus as described in the Tai Chan Shu (Book of Childbirth) and the Mai Jing. Not only is studying pregnancy and fetal development at the core of the practice of obstetrics, it is also a vehicle for deeply comprehending organ and channel functions, and the nature of life at large. Fetal development as described in Han and pre-Han dynasty texts matches the cosmic circular template of biao - ben - zhong - qi and the resolution times of the 6 Conformations in the Nei Jing and Shang Han Lun. We will explore the physiology and pathology of pregnancy, birth and postpartum in detail, and study the obstetrical chapters of the Jin Gui Yao Lue line by line.
Conclusion: The last module will present close to 100 case studies of pregnancy, birth and postpartum, illustrating the principles and differential diagnosis of the pathologies discussed in previous classes. In the last class, students will be given an opportunity to present and discuss their own case studies.
This training program aims to not only provide rock-solid clinical acumen in diagnosis and treatment in the field of obstetrics, but also to give deeper understanding of human physiology and pathology in general, as it was seen in the Chinese medical Classics. Moreover, it aspires to inscribe this knowledge into a greater awareness of heavenly phenomena and rotation around the center of the human heart, which is the seat of our awareness and the first organ to develop in a baby. This macrocosmic awareness was the source of the amazing corpus of knowledge in the Classics, and the precursor to right action, right diagnosis and efficacious treatment.
